In this beginner friendly class, students will learn from start to finish how to work with natural dyes and create 3 tie-dye bandanas they can take home with them that day. We will walk through the steps of a) preparing the fabric for dye (scouring and mordanting), b) preparing natural dyes, and c) tie-dye techniques which students will use to make their own creations. The last 30 minutes of class will be for final questions and steaming the pieces before students take them home.
This class will be held in our outdoor Courtyard. Please note that we have both a scheduled class date and a tentative rain date, and participants should plan to be available for both in case of inclement weather. Students should wear apparel that can get messy, as natural dyes may stain clothing.
About the Instructor:
Lakesha Allen graduated from Savannah College of Art & Design with a BFA in Fibers (or textile design) in 2016. It was there that she took a course on natural dying and fell in love with the many possibilities this art could hold. Following her education, she worked in the interior design field, eventually working as a flooring designer for Patcraft Customs and Mohawk Industries.
